The Transformation of the Literary Review in the Age of Social Networks

Literary reviews have changed considerably in the current fluid era and are still changing. This is due to new media, and especially social networks, where anyone can become a reviewer and professionalism and knowledge of literary scholarship is no longer needed as it used to be. Therefore, this thesis discusses the transformation of literary reviewing in the age of social media by examining the form, congruence and differences of professional reviews in cultural and social periodicals and instagram posts containing book reviews. The aim of this thesis was to find out what similarities or differences there are between reviews written by literary critics and book reviews posted on Instagram by ordinary users. The evaluation was carried out by analysing several professional reviews and several book posts on Instagram on three selected titles, namely Ostrov by Bianca Bell, Mezipřistání by Matej Hořava and Probudím se na Šibuji by Anna Cima, and then comparing these findings. This bachelor's thesis describes the development of literary criticism conception and it's earlier typology. The thesis deals with the difference between literary criticism and reviews - how these dissimilarities appear in theory and in practice. The applicable typology for present Czech literary criticism has been suggested in this thesis. The typology mentioned divides literary criticism into two main types: text-oriented criticism and context-oriented criticism. It discusses the development of value conception and what is a value even nowadays. For contemporary literary critics it is originality, credibility of the work and composition. It provides information on how criticism is presented by individual Czech periodicals including Host, A2, Revolver Revue, Tvar, Souvislosti and Literární noviny.

Keywords: Nağīb Maḥfūẓ, egyptian literature, history, symbol, image, egyptology, leader, nationalism, identity This thesis examines the role of the symbols in the three historical novels of Nağīb Maḥfūẓ that take place in the Ancient Egypt. In his return to the history of his nation, he shows people the way to their own identity and explains the contemporary situation in the country by using symbols. We try to prove that his novels renew the traditions and connect the modern Egypt with the legends. We demonstrate on the extracts the intentions of the author, confront his deviation from the historical facts and present reasons which led author to do that. For further comprehension, we give details about the historical novel, egyptology and show the impact of european authors on Nağīb Maḥfūẓ.
